Sunday Aussie arthursday update

Stoked to have received this comment from The Slow Schlepper in the down under after last week's Arthursday post [Cino Cinelli and the design (and logo!) of the Bicycle], leading to an post on his blog with an update about a 30yr. mural by Keith Haring.
The internet is a wonderful tool.
Thanks SS!

friday frolicking in the park with bike snob and velo vogue

continuing on the bike snob theme, it's quite possible he saw the pacific ocean on friday.

a few friends, mamakSF and velo vogue, and a music bike came along to the 2nd casting call. here's some pictures that jenn chan took.

on the way to snobbery.

not quite ready for my closeup. i need my SAG card first please.

KT took the dressing euro part very seriously. so cute!!

preparing for scene.

what is snobbier than this setting? not much.

mamakSF about to deliver bread all around town.

windmills and birds.

our golden gate park has so many beautiful nooks and crannies! the queen wilhemina garden is one of them!

speaker bike.

rookie came too!

it was such an awesome time. until i left my pannier behind. but i got it back quickly...and i subsequently passed out (in a bed) from the stress. saturday was a new day!

can't wait to see what the video will look like. did we make the cut, or the cutting room floor. we just have to wait and see.

and now will just have to leave you with the theme song to my life. ;)

friday fun times: sf (via nyc) video shoot

apologies for the quietness, but we've been hard at work over here in SF. just tryin' to make a livin'.

and in the spirit of that, a couple of days ago i happened to see there was a tweet laying for me to pick it up as the sun shone in my eyes begging me to wake up and face the day.

well, being that i don't appear very "EURO," whatever that means (i've heard rumors that my ancestors surely have heard of these european fellas), i decided i'd go to people watch whether they would have me or not. i mean i've got to be at least 5-30% european. so my lips show and tell me.

oh, and also the place for the open casting was very close to where i work 9 to 5.

and this is a little bit of what transpired yesterday afternoon. it was lovely to see ladyfleur and bike pretty and their gorgeous bikes as well!

this afternoon there's more open casting calls for people that have flexi time schedules per the tweetie bird above. and yes, bike snob, we do work, but some of us are lucky enough to be able to do our work from wherever the world we may be, only if it is connected to the matrix. having reasonable supervisors helps as well...

so now where did i put my music bike?

these are the before pictures...

north american handmade bicycle show 2012

wellwell. you probably have seen a bunch of pictures already from this show.

NAHBS

this was a very last minute decision for me to go, but it was just SOCLOSE to sf. so we rented a zipcar (cheaper than amtrak, faster than bike unfortunately), and off we went in the wee hours of saturday morning to go to the show.

when we heard "it is now 10 minutes until 6 o'clock," is when we realized we had been standing and looking at the most gorgeous bikes i've seen for just over SEVEN HOURS.

my favorite was probably this one made by bishop bikes. it eventually won best lugged bike.

NAHBS

another one that stood out to me was the shamrock cycles cross/commuter bike. i'm not crazy about that color, but the idea is awesome. can easily remove the racks/fenders.

NAHBS

saw some people we knew too...

Crowd photo and.. oh, hi Melyssa

and then this won best city bike. any surprise it's a (near) mixte frame? didn't think so.

NAHBS

NAHBS

saw so many bamboo bikes, carbon/ti tandems, belt drives, internal gear hubs, integrated [fill in the blank], accessories, you name it. we saw it. oh, except female framebuilders. didn't really see any of those. i hope they were on their lunch break while i was visiting the booth. ahem.

oh and lots of chain guards that looked like this:

NAHBS

i was happy to see some latino last names represented as well. dominguez is one, and rebolledo is another

we also chatted with the people (metrofiets) that made ade's frame!

First Glimpse

i'm still swooning over the bikes....maybe drooling a little bit too. i know it's hard for framebuilders to get out to the show all the time, but would be great to see more women framebuilders represented in the coming years.

so glad we decided to go 6 hours before we left sf. thanks to prawnpie, owlboogie and richard for the pics from the show!

The Quest, The Joy and The Commitment

Story submitted to us, by Mark / OwlBoogie
♥Gracias + RIDE ON!!!!!
- - - - - - - - - - - -

About 3 years ago, I started looking for my Rosebud, my Eleanor, my
unicorn: The 1993 Bridgestone XO-1. The search at that point was
really more of an appreciation for other people's XO's. With little
budget I ended up buying a lower end 1994 XO-5 which I named Grapes. I
rode that bike for about a year and a half. About 2 months ago I set
aside a budget for the elusive XO-1. One showed up on Craigslist but
the seller said it was too small. Bummed, I searched on. An 1992 XO-2
showed up but was sold right before I called. A few days later, the
XO-1 seller contacts me and said he measured it wrong and that it is
indeed my size. I got excited!

Emailed him back… And emailed again… And again… Yet again… Nada.

*sigh* The search went on...

Then about 2 weeks later on a Monday morning, I check my bookmarked
“bridgestone” craigslist bike search and the magic words “BRIDGESTONE
XO-1 / 48cm (oakland west)” shows up. It’s priced above my budget, but
this opportunity doesn’t come very often. I immediately email and I
get a call from the seller about 2 hours later. A quick pitstop at
the bank and by lunchtime I was an XO-1 owner.

Upon receipt
Upon receipt

Funny thing is, at the time I picked the bike up I didn’t realize that
it would change my life. It was more than just buying a bike. I made a
promise to myself that if I ever found an XO-1 that I would ride it on
an AIDS Life Cycle ride. So in 2012, my best friend and I will be
doing that. She is now looking for a suitable road bike. Time to start
training.

Also, I want to ride this thing all the time! So now I’m making a
commitment to ride into work at least twice a week. What deters me
from riding is - work is in Potrero Hill, I live in Twin Peaks and I
am not a good climber on my bike. This will be my exercise. Since
starting my new job, I haven't been working out as often. So why not
kill 2 birds with one bike? (no offense to birds, I'm an owl)

Here I go!
Here I go!

I have my dream bike and I'm gonna be cycling a lot more. If you see
me in the city on my little orange bike: ring a bell, say "Hi!" or
tell me to take the lane! Ha!

Thanks Change Your Life Ride a Bike for letting me write about my experience.

Hey y’all, this bike changed my life.

hey guys, cali here. the following post is a guest contribution from one of my 2.0 friends, alex. he recently bought a bike, and i asked him to share a little bit about that with you guys. being the 2.0 kind of dude he is, he readily complied. here it is. enjoy.

Two weeks ago I bought a bike and y’all were right: my life has changed. I’m addicted to bike. Instantly, my commute turned into a joyously rowdy ride down Valencia and Market in the sun, rain and wind. I get on that bike and I feel like I’m riding around like I did when I was a kid, but now I’m rolling through streets I’ve never seen and stopping at places I’ve never been. Finding sweet short cuts, timing out stoplights and dodging doors and busses are now part of my everyday routine. And it’s awesome.

I’ve been reading this blog for a while, and should have expected that my life would change, but it happened quickly and thoroughly. The transition has been more like a reversion to myself as a little dude, getting into trouble, back in the day. Drenching myself in a torrential downpour on the way to work was a badass adventure compared to the drudge of being crammed down in a tunnel on BART. And blazing through the city up and down dominating hills with sandstormy headwinds is my new fave thing. Especially when finished with some cold beers.

So yeah, thanks for the inspiration, thought I’d share these photos. Say what’s up if you see me riding through.

Chillin' with the homey Nature's Mistake on Page

thanks alex for submitting a post about your recent adventures. so much jam packed into two weeks of riding! and agreed, nothing better to top off some riding with a nice cold beer...or your beverage of choice, of course. ahem. sssssup.
