Trial Parking. Is That Like A Training Bra?

Parking Trial

This is a trial of on-street parking that the City has put in. It will be taken down on December 4th. My question is, why? Just drill those puppies in there! I am sure it has something to do with our stupid injunction, but I have had enough. If I had enough money, I think I would just start buying bike racks and installing them around the City myself- Johnny Bikerack!

I wonder if I could have one of these placed in front of my home?

  1. every time i ride home, i pass this temporary corral. it's usually pretty full. keep it!!!

i also read on streetsbog that they are going to put on street bike parking in front of mojos. i believe i can recall a time we did such a thing. :)

  3. This rack comes with a sign: caution, parking your bike here might mean that your legs will look great in 2 years ;-)

  4. Truly, what is the idea behind the "trial' status? If it works, do they put in line to actually be implemented, several years later? Are they going to try this same rack in many different locations around town to see which is "best" so that they can install just one, and then start the process over? Or just maybe, someone feels a need to troll for objections, so once they take it back out, any inquiries will be met with a "Well, we tried it, but it was too controversial" response. Really, this whole "trial" stance does not bode well, in any interpretation. At the very least, any "fair" trial should last a whole year. Val

  5. Val- the "trial" status is most likely because of legal issues San Francisco is facing over bike planning. This rack removes a parking space which means bureaucracy and waiting. If it is "temporary" it kinda just slides through for a bit.

  6. So...they put it in for a month (or whatever), everyone likes it, then they have to take it back out until What's-his-name dies and stops filing injunctions? Still doesn't sound too great to me. It would seem that S.F. bike advocacy needs craftier lawyers (I know, but sometimes they are necessary). Val

  7. You can have all the lawyers in the world, it still comes down to how a judge interprets the law. Not much you can do about that. As to the temporary nature of things, it is more like if we try things here and there and see what we like and how it works, when the injunction is lifted we can get right to doing things without delay. It makes more projects "shovel ready" and therefore, more likely to get done. Also, in the partial lifting of the injunction, we can put in things like parking and sharrows because they are "reversible". So even the Scott street lane I wrote about the other day is "temporary" until we are told otherwise by the judge.

Stupid, but it is our reality.
