New Bike Lane!!!!

San Francisco painted its first new bike lane in over 3 years!!!! It is only a block long (Scott st. between Oak and Fell), but it was a spot that needed it and we will take it! I think I may be the first of us here at the blog to ride on it, although Cali could have beat me to it.

SF has been under this stupid injunction that prevents any infrastructure to be created in the City for the last 3 years. I could rant about the stupidity of it, and the utter selfishness of the person behind it, but instead I will share pictures!

These are my shots. I was so happy to be able to take them!

Here is to what comes next! San Francisco cycling has increased 53% since 2006 without any changes to our bicycling infrastructure. Despite legal battles and increased car traffic in the City, the number of people who have chosen to ride in SF goes up every day. We will prevail. We will gain our rightful spot in the street. It is already happening!

  1. A new bike lane is a nice victory for SF. Congratulations. Flagstaff continues to plod along as best we can with adding new portions of the urban trail - one being installed right now along a small portion of Route 66. Luckily, our urban trail is a major community priority. Unfortunately, the AZ State Legislature seems to be trying to destroy the public school system so I hold little hope that they will be an help with supporting our needs.

  2. great to have a new lane! but being in between two lanes of moving traffic without any barriers or buffers seems dangerous.

  3. Anon- it was dangerous before. The lead up to this block was a bike box that put bikes in direct competition with cars to get to the next intersection. Now everyone has a place to be, no weaving or dodging. Waaaaaaayyyyyyy better : )

SRAB- It is a long and obnoxious fight but you will get there. Our bicycle community has grown in spite of it all, so will yours!

  7. Yay! Hopefully the city will ramp up the work to make up for lost time.

  8. Dottie- the only work we can do in the City at this time is work that has been deemed "reversible". We are still under the injunction we have been under for the last three years. Of the 50ish projects that were approved by the City, only 3 miles of it will be executed between now and June (the next court date, I think. Could be sooner). At that time, the judge could decide to bag the whole thing and then goodbye new lanes and parking.

I should be more optimistic, but I am so tired of the BS around this issue here in my fine city.
