the frugal traveler checks out NYC's bike share prices for visitors. the day rate became available this past sunday. the cost? well, seems more than the cost of a subway trip and a transfer. since these bikes are meant to be transportation alternatives, and not for recreation, this seems a little strange. but it is new york after all, where things are going to be expensive. london, a city some say is even more expensive than nyc (i've never been to london, so i can't say for sure), costs £3, or about $4.50. nyc? $10+
maybe since these bikes come with their own locking mechanism when you park them, it's worth it? makes me wonder what SF will do with its own pricing whenever we get bikeshares of this magnitude.
hmm. not sure what to think about this development right now, but check out the article for yourself and let us know what you think in the comments!

nyc bicycle balancing act
whoa. i opened up my inbox today to see this glorious photograph taken by stanley kubrick, better known as the director of the shining, a clockwork orange, and full metal jacket, among others.
and you thought you had balance when you ride your bike with no hands. whoaaaaaaa.
also...what composition! amazing.
happy tuesday everyone! SF is expected to get gusts of wind up to 50-70mph (if a certain local news outlet is to be believed). not sure if that means i'll be muni-ing it or braving it out there. get ready for it y'all...

barnard and bike rides!
a new chapter of my alma mater's alumni group has sprung up. the school was the big reason i was in for nyc for 8 years before heading on out here to the wild west. when i heard about the new group, i jumped at the opportunity to join since i truly loved my college experience.
i rode my bike in nyc a little bit, not during school, but when i lived in brooklyn. funnily enough, that bike was bought here in san francisco post-graduation, traveled with me up to seattle and portland and then to austin to brooklyn. then back to berkeley. phew. then it got stolen. sad face. although now my bikes better suit me than that one would if i had it now, i STILL look for it. it was stolen out of my padlocked shed. sad face. (side note: padlocks don't work in california)
anyway, this is all going in that my two loves, bikes and barnard, are going to intersect. i'm hosting a bike ride y'all. it's gonna be short and sweet and involve coffee and beer. yum.
did you go to barnard and live in the bay area? if so, please join us! facebook event here. don't do the FB? well, there's eventbrite tickets available too. see you and your guests on the ride!

The Drivers Aren't Complaining!
The above title is my favorite line from the film.
It is a shame people have to create controversy where there is none. It makes it so much more difficult to get these projects out to the many places who need them. Like, all of San Francisco!!
Do you dream of lanes like these? What are the ones like in your neck of the woods?

An ode to master Bill
Ages before the Sartorialist there was Bill. I have followed his interviews, media NYT posts and columns for ages and seeing this picture today pop up in my feed-reader made me smile.
Bill Cunningham at his age of 80, continues to use film and not digital for all his shoots. Timeless, classy and simple.
Fantastic!!

johnny legs
i didn't know that john leguizamo was pretty into riding his bike. luckily for us, cnn.com did and got footage of him running around nyc on his bici. check out his helmet stash...and watch him nearly get doored by nypd.
i'm particularly a fan of his reasons for why he rides. it's not just him "sav[ing] the world" as the cnn title suggests (although that is totally valid...). his reasons sound a lot like the ones we here at CYLRAB have said before: less stress, faster, enjoyable, etc. this makes me think he's the real deal. bummer to hear his wife does not join him after she nearly got hit by a car. puro sad face, #nobueno.
and here's the behind the scenes:
nice to see a latino celebrity-type talking about this stuff.
have a great weekend and happy riding. gonna be beautiful here in the yay. enjoy!!
thanks to CI for the forward on facebook :)
