Arthursday: tunnels

/link+art credit: work by Tatsuro Kiuchi via it's nice that.
Tunnels would be a big prominent birthmark if Critical was a human body. With the exception of the Geary and Park Presidio ones, tunnels are a frequent and quintessential experience whilst participating in a San Francisco critical mass ride.

Tomorrow is the 20th anniversary and here is more info, links and good stuff including purchasing/download of BEAUTIFUL poster done by rad local artists: SF Critical Mass

I've expanded the usual short+sweet Arthursday a bit, including a few San Francisco tunnel shots as well as one from Los Angeles by our 4th amiga in Los Angeles: Caryl (first photo below) +the rest them are from the 3 of us here in SF :)

Weekend Gigante in San Francisco

We are head over hills with the last few games, events, halloween, we are all surprised our Ade is so active on FB!! wooot --- so many surprises and we can almost smell the World Series winners around the corner.
We have even gotten to see our girl KT on TV!! the biggest fan of them all =)
Calitexican and the Rangers will have to step up their game and win some to make it exciting... only so we can have the win in our beloved Califas state. kthx!

Speaking of our amiga KT, here are some of her pictures to kick off the week in spirit.
I think we have all gone to a game with her at this point. So much fun!!

Mayor Gavin Newsom's spokesman Tony Winnicker said city officials sought to  show Saturday's Game 3 on a jumbo screen at Civic Center Plaza, similar to  how more than a dozen World Cup soccer games were shown there over the summer. _via nbcbayarea

Greenology.

LGRAB Summer long

Here is our Change Your Life, Ride a Bike - post for riding on the greeway.
June 28-July 18: New Territory
* Ride a greenway
3 out of 4 from this blog (the 3 here in San Francisco) ride this path quite often. It has been the first step on (insert potentially long city-wide politics injunction here) moving forward with a friendlier pedestrian + cycling San Francisco.
green sign dude.

At any rate, here are our photos. We have all (synchronized, not kidding) immediately texted each other the second we came across this. And since then, riding on the green lanes, makes you wonder - how come the whole city is not painted like this.
In the meantime, here are some of our green pictures.

So you can imagine the thrill. Here are some pictures of this green milestone. Cheers!

I recently talked to one of my favorite baristas around town. He was telling me about the time (long before the blogesphere) when he visited his boyfriend in the ealry 90s in Europe, they had such easy routes for people on bikes, he said he biked there all the time. What happened when he returned to the city?, I asked. He is a San Franciscan and told me that since then, he has not ridden a bike much. I have been keeping him posted on the Sunday Street dates and he has had tons of fun with them. I asked if he was scared of everyday traffic, he said he was hit by a car shortly after his European trip, and that since then he became a happy pedestrian. Anyways, thought I'd share that story.

"The purpose of Bike and Build is twofold. To raise money for organizations like Habitat for Humanity, and also during the ride across country, the cyclists take a break from riding from time to time; to actually lend a hand, in the form of offering their labor to help build homes." Read more»

Drawing autism.

From Book By Its Cover - Drawing Autism post
by Jillian Mullin
"Mostly paintings, drawings and collages, there is a wide range of styles, from realistic landscapes, to obsessive cataloguing drawings, to colorful collages. Gregory Blackstone, who I wrote about before is one of the artists featured in the book. Each artist is also interviewed about their work and their very candid answers are refreshing."

Thought I'd share. I love Books. Humans. Talents. We are all connected.

Oil spill post.

Over the weekend, I came across this post from the blog HiLobrow. As devastating as the oil spills are, and because I don't watch much TV, photographs and the internet have kept me posted and quasi-up to date. Too depressing.
Here is a great post about the current situation on the other side of our coast, in Boston.
"Carrying our bicycles above our heads we trudged with great difficulty along the submerged pavement of Dartmouth Street and entered the open door of the John Hancock building, which was all but deserted. The once-gleaming marble floors of this temple of finance were entirely blackened with oil. Ascending via emergency stairwell, after an hour of stiff climbing, we stepped out into the building’s observatory level. From it we could see the streets of Back Bay radiating in every direction, while below us the road was yellow from side to side with the tops of the motionless taxis."

I Read Your Blog!

This last year has brought a number of new people into my life. I am amazed at how interesting and involved all of them are. Every one of them has something intelligent to say. Every one of them is talented and accomplished. When I spend time with them I am reminded, pleasantly, that I need to step up my game so I can keep up. Each of them challenges me in a different way and I walk away from our time together full of ideas and inspiration.

While all of the women in this picture have many talents and interests, what they bring to the big picture of American cycling as an everyday activity of normal life is immeasurable. Each of them has found a way to shatter the myth of bicycle as sport toy and brings that knowledge to the world everyday.

Some of these new people got together to celebrate our lovely Cali's birthday. This is them-

A Whole Lotta Girl Power

From left to right-

Lisa Marie of Hambone Designs.

Calitexican- this chic can write.

Meligrosa- My first partner in bicycle blogging crime : )

Kristen- Just a day after Meli and I decided to start this little project of ours, Kristen asked me to join her over at Vélo Vogue.

Gwen- A recent addition over at VV. Gwen is also the fire behind the fashion shows for the SF Bike Expo and SFBC's Bike Away From Work parties.

Lilia- Her thoughts are provoking. Her sense of humor is silly. She looks better in pink than I do.

Me.

Ramona- another of the VV women and the brains behind the "Bike Wardrobe Remix".

I raise my glass to you all, my fellow SF bicycle bloggers. You have all made an impact and I am honored to know you all!

blood and bikes

a friend to the blog, mr. cyclelicious, got into a minor accident the other day with a car. while he seems to be doing ok (right?), it got me thinking about the not so pretty part of riding around.

Post Crash Panda

i'm sure we all have some minor accident stories and whatnot. i've had a few, a memorable one was with a car in brooklyn, a couple were completely all my fault, some were near misses.

the following pics are from my last one that falls into the completely my fault category. (hi mom!)

this fall didn't even result from me riding my bike, but merely walking around. when i mentioned this to the doctor at the hospital, she immediately asked if i was wearing my helmet. i told her i wasn't, but repeated that i was walking on the sidewalk and hit the bottom of my face. she had this funny look on her face after i said that.

suture day: they sewed me up on the inside because i bit through my lip,

bikes give you bruises sometimes

day three: swelling is down a bit. can eat a little better.

day 3: swelling is down...

day 8: i can sort of smile, but the scar tissue is building up. ouch.

the most I've been able to smile in a week :)

sigh. i still have that scar on the outside of my lip, i still have scar tissue on the inside where they sewed me up. (and i bit around the inside scar rather hard the other day i might add...ouch)

how about you dear readers? did you learn anything from your experience? for example, i learned that wearing helmets on the sidewalk is a good policy and is a good and insightful question for doctors to ask. i'm joking. oh, and to not trip while walking home. while tipsy. over that, i'm not joking.

Into The Sunset!

This just in from John Romeo Alpha at "One Speed: Go!"- "My older daughter asked me to go for a ride just before sunset tonight. A last taste of freedom before she goes back to school tomorrow, I guess."

[e+alpha+sunset.jpg]

Sometimes they complain, and sometimes they fight it, but after all is said and done, our kids love to spend time with us. They love to spend quality time with us best, and it doesn't get anymore quality than a sunset ride with Dad : )

Day 2 Of The Copenhagen Invasion

This was exactly a month ago. Our month for us here in San Francisco has been a complete package of bikes, coffee, friends, visiting friends, let's go, we're here non-stop. Lots of fun, and I, am personally glad for this Thanksgiving break. I savored it to the max.

Anyways, this post is long due from the Friday night before halloween. Mikael (As you may now him from copenhaginize & CCC) had done his lecture about bikes and cities earlier that day, and he was probably more jet-lagged than anyone I had interacted with in a while. He was a trooper It was a great group for dinner, some blogging friends of Mikael from the Bay area, the girls and Ade's family.

After some yummy Ethiopian finger friendly dinner, we went for a stroll around the post-critical mass craziness around the heart of the Mission. Mikael was more than thrilled to be riding with all the SF ladies, and concerned that the bar would be too far, you know in copenhagen we only go 2 blocks to a bar and back ;-)
Wait, we got 3 blocks to go - oh so far...

After we heard last call, we decided to yes, head out and ride to each of our destinations. San Francisco may only be 7 mi. square so nothing seems 'far' but I guess those Europeans think of our blocks as big long miles (are we there yet?!?) It was a blast and we all enjoyed ourselves.
