we love submissions from our readers! here's butter bill in sacramento, looking rather excited to see these bike racks!

i'm not sure how practical they are, but hey, i'm willing to try them out! i do like how unusual they are and how much attention they command.

  1. I'm not so sure that thing is very well thought out. How would you lock up with a u-lock? Also, it looks like if you have full fenders, you might be out of luck.

  2. ...also, try doing that with a 50 lb bike with a front rack and huge basket on it :)

clever, but maybe a little too clever :)

  3. @portlandize: yah, i have one of those 40 pound bikes with a wood lined basket. they would be very impractical for me.

@barry jt: i think there's room to lock up at the bottom. again, not very practical.

  4. Yeah, you can lock on the bottom, but all you're going to catch on the bike with a U is some spokes.

You're also pretty much going to have to get down on the ground and rassle the thang, which is why no one has bothered.

  5. How are you supposed to lock to this thing? It looks dumb as hell. You can lock the front wheel or the rear wheel but nothing lets you reach the frame. BOO!

  6. I thought the same about full fenders, and with a long bike like an Xtracycle it would be difficult. I guess it's the usual thing of the facilities being dictated by the dominant bike design, or the design the planners are familiar with any way.

I'd never get my Bakfiets in there, (but then it weighs 50 odd pounds and has its own lock so I doubt that'd be a problem).

  7. Those look like the racks in front of the Hot Italian restaurant in Midtown. My husband and I used them with our touring bikes. They worked OK, except that one of the racks was broken so my husband's bike was basically lashed on with his cable lock. The restaurant had more bike parking than car parking which made us super happy.

  8. Nice parking area for bikes, but I'm not sure if my bikes are secured, I always use my personal lock to avoid my bikes from thieves.
