scenes from the bikey lane: grandfather edition

this morning on my way to work, i passed through the panhandle, which has a path where walkers/runners and bikers can all use. it gets hairy at times, but generally is pleasant to use.

today on my ride i saw what appeared to be a grandfather and his two grandchildren. the grandfather was in an electric wheelchair and had one boy in his lap. the older boy, about 6 or 7 years old, was on a bicycle riding behind them. it was a touching moment for me to see & thought it was good to share with all of you.

have a great monday!

scenes from the bikey lane: bike with history edition

i recently went over to that awesomeness that is spur (sf planning and urban research associations), to look at their exhibit on reclaiming market street, where they featured one of our friends as one "project [that highlights] the many ways in which cities, nationally and internationally, are engaged in reimagining their public spaces through experimental urban planning." ooh, que fancy speak. and here i just thought it was people using the physical urban space they have to work with to make it fun and livable for them. oh wait, that's the same thing ;)

anyway, outside there was this awesome bike. not even parked to anything. after looking at the chain, seems to me only one person could ride it.

makes me wonder about the history of that bike. who the person is, where the bike and the person met, etc.

do you also feel that way when you see a bike that has an obviously fascinating past?

friday fun times: twizzler scraper bike!!

one scene from the bikey lane that i just had to pull over and examine a little more closely this past wednesday...

Um...yeah?

what's going on here?

thoughts or comments much appreciated.

have a great three-day weekend everyone!

a scene from the bikey lane: rear wheel adventures

recently i was with some friends on our way to see a show after work when i shifted and then my cranks stopped moving. ruhroh. i pulled over and my companions and i struggled to find out what was going on with my rear cassette/wheel.

in fiddling around back there we proceeded to get filthy as my chain hadn't been cleaned in quite some time. ew. and gross.

Muni Tarantula

after several attempts by our little group, including a passerby, to get the back wheel on the bike, we ended up walking to our destination. along the way, two of us who have taken and put on back wheels before were discussing our confusion about why we were unable to get it back on ourselves. and then LMG said, "i think we need to take maintenance classes." agreed!! "what if this had happened on my way to work?" i wondered.

Picture 1

two of us ended up taking muni part of the way home. the driver, who apparently is quite the bike fan (by the way, can more muni drivers be bike friendly please? kthx), decided to show us a picture of his penny farthing. i guess this means he carries these pictures with him in the bus or on his person, because he produced them rather quickly.

Muni Pictures

now, i say we took muni only part of the way home because we had to transfer. as we were walking to the transfer point we ran into these two people i have now renamed my hayes valley angels.

Hayes Valley Angels

the guy on the right fiddled with my rear wheel and was able to put it back so i could get home. he told me i needed to do some cable maintenance before riding a lot more, "because you see this (extremely loose cable)? that's not good."

Picture 2

so i got home, very tentatively, on my bike. with a new resolve to learn how to put on that back wheel that 5 people could not figure out how to do. and also to clean my filthy disgusting chain. which i did the latter recently and also tightened the cables with help from a friend and their awesome bike friendly garage. i have scheduled another time to look at my rear wheel with an another extra careful eye.

do it...yourself. bike maintenance is next on the list.

scenes from the bikey lane: (w)holy weeks worth edition

this has been compiling in my head for the past couple of weeks. i think i had been waiting for a bit cause after a while of noticing a lot females riding to work, lately have been noticing a lot of guys and i'll be the only woman riding with them.

1. a little teeny tiny rat sized dog breaking away from its owner at 7th and market and nearly breaking its teeny little chicken wing leg in the muni tracks in front of a bus....then the light turned green. (i do not know what happened to the dog...sorry. am curious myself)

2. a raccoon in golden gate park looking a little scary. good thing i was on my bike. those eyyyessss...#nobueno

3. riding through the panhandle in the morning, i've counted tons of people on bikes, but maybe 1 to 3 will be female for the morning commute in either direction. where da females at?

4. an 18-wheeler on fell street in the left hand lane, which is the lane right next to the bike lane. i was very nervous as it passed me. that is an understatement. i had visions of the wind pulling me under the tires and running over me several times.

5. two acquaintances chatting me up on market street on the way to work. oh hai...is better than just going to work alone.

6. speaking of market, last week on the way to butter lap in the evening, i saw the beginnings of re-striping the completely ridiculous bike lane at market and 10th. NOW it makes more sense. phew and yay.

7. more bikey changes going on in the calitexican's hood at mojos. very nice spot to grab a beer and a bite after work now that the light stays with us later in the day.

8. me pulling the other meli and grabbing some coffee in the linden lands while it rained in my coffee.

Happy bikes with baskets

9. rainy days...going away....but the last rainy day, an older dapper gentleman with a matching bike said at a stop light, "thank god for fenders on a day like today!" (yes, he said it with an exclamation point) and the other guy and i at the light (again, just me and two dudes...wtf?) were all smiles and saying, yes, thank goodness for fenders. no skunky stripe for me.

10. and finally, i saw this girl i went to college with walking down the street. i did a double take. she's the one that introduced me to riding around on two wheels. we had fallen out of touch, and i didn't know if i should say something, but something tells me this town is small enough that chances are highly likely i will see her again.

happy week everyone!

scenes from the bikey lane: monday march madness edition.

hey y'all. can you believe it's march already?! wow, 2010 is speeding by like a certain famous bikey dude riding his cargo bike down the wiggle the other day. vroom vroom.

ok then, let's get to it:

1. light grey skies, dark gray asphalt outlined with yellow stripes next to dewy and fresh smelling green grass. nice change of scenery.

2. sausage fest throughout said above route.

3. 3 women, 1 male at page and octavia.

4. 5 women, 0 males at 7th and market.

5. 6 women, 2 men at 5th and market.

6. red mixte seen inside bank: 1

7. baskets seen: 4. two were on the same bike.

8. mixtes spotted: 2. upright handlebars on those bikes: 2.

9. cords worn: 1 pair. (brand unknown. not pink)

see anything fun or different on your commute this morning?

an informal count

who says that women ride less than men? ok, a lot of people do, but this is what i gathered as i was scoping out items for scenes from the bikey lane from this morning's commute. the following numbers were counted at stops at certain intersections along my route. meaning there was enough time for us to stop and for me to count before moving along with traffic. this occurred just before 9am this first monday morning of 2010.

1. page & octavia: 3 women; 1 man

2. van ness & market: 3 women; 1 man

3. 7th & market: 4 women; 2 men

4. 5th & market: 4 women; 3 men

5. 4th & market: 3 women; 3 men.

this sort of interested me as i started really counting the numbers. i think i may keep this up and see how my very informal take on gathering data & numbers goes.

do you see a significant amount of either gender on your workday commutes? are you noticing any changes?

scenes from the bikey lane: end of the decade, edition

hi guys!

1. man on bike at church and 14th. he thanked me for stopping and riding "civilly." he says i'm a good example of how people should ride. all because i stopped at a stop sign. hmm. interesting. anyway, he did express that 2010 should be the year we all ride bikes. right on! or ride on as the case may be.

2. rain! oh hai, i haven't missed you at all.

3. best buy's new(ish?) bike parking! 4 racks. huge space in between the racks for all you cargo bikers out there. meli has a post regarding this very store and how they didn't have bike parking. perhaps best buy's big brother read it?

Best buy bike parking lot.

4. this strange old man baby wishing us a happy 2010!

Creepy baby 2010

creeeeepy. but that's my neighborhood y'all!

have a happy and very safe new year's celebratory weekend. if you ride your bikes, please, um, be responsible and stuff. hugs & love for a great end to the first decade of the new century.

scenes from the bikey lane: happy holidays edition

this past sunday, the san francisco bike coalition held its 6th annual christmas lights ride. it started off at around 6:30pm and we rode all over the city looking at houses that really go all out with their light decorations. we rode to christmas tunes, sang some of our own made up holiday songs, and, of course, were very very merry.

after having lived on the east coast for so long, it doesn't feel like christmas to me unless it's 30 degrees F. however, this ride helped me get into the holiday spirit. new friends 2.0, old friends, new bikes, old bikes, spirits and snacks, and lots and lots of lights for all!

overheard:
"merry christmas asshole! :)" -- to a car that insisted on honking often and loudly at the 100 or so bikers around us.

"we're, like, the happiest gang ever."

"wheeeee"

"fa la la la la, ga ga ga gaaaah"

"wheeeee"

[singing with carolers to various tunes]

"aaaaaaaadriiiiiiennnnne!"

"wheeee"

"nice sf tie"

"our rudolph's nose went out!!"

(and i'm not joking about how often i heard those "wheee"s either)

christmas lights panda!

it's a very meli christmas.

wheeee! (see, i really wasn't kidding about that)

christmas lights limbo!

snack time. finito. spirits and smiles all around.

despite the light rain, & a man down (sad face), it was really fun. good times :)

please share your bikey holiday lights stories. i've seen some pics on flickr already. GO!

happy holidays everyone!

scenes from the bikey lane: austin, I'M HOME, edition.

in case you haven't guessed by the title of this post, i'm home in texas right now. yay.

i was a chauffeur for the mama texican earlier today (no u-lock required), and rather than going home, i went around downtown austin. it has changed a lot. i forgot some places i used to know, i forgot how to get to certain places, i forgot that i forget things.

but i didn't forget about the bikey time that i wanted to squeeze in. so, after getting a little turned around, i went to mellow johnny's because it is a few blocks away from the mama texican's workey times place.

i got some coffee and then cruised around the bike store.

Eddy y Juan

Scuba steve goes wheee!

Juanny's lowrider

i helped a(n admittedly clueless) guy buy a shirt for his sister, looked at clothes & bikey art, and looked at rows and rows of bikes.

as you may know from reading this blog...we over here have a weakness for mixtes.

Masi mixte

"a powder blue 8 speed masi mixte soulville? i need to get on this bike right now," i thought to myself.

so i did. and this is what i saw:

Masi mixte panda

Ground zero

Guitars y (no) Cadillacs

Bridge. Bici.

Here we go yo.

2 wheeled 4 runner.

if you have/had to travel far during the holiday season, did/do you incorporate your bike love into your trip? for example, besides my test ride of that delicious mixte, i am planning on going back and renting a bike from MJ's and teaching one of my cousins (who is 15!!) how to ride a bike. i also got another cousin talking about bikes, so i plan on visiting his bikey soon. i hear it has an old school iron child's seat on it.

please let us know in the comments :)

scenes from the bikey lane: is it friday happy hour yet...edition

1.) a sleepy hollow type fog kissing the streets of san francisco.

2.) plenty of red cheeked commuters blowing cotton puff balls out of their mouths.

3.) my fingers…FREEZING. Why did I forget to put on my gloves when I left my apartment? Either way, it was remedied at the intersection of highway and my way. Pronto.

4.) no ichabod crane, but another commuter on a trusty steed singing country tunes. Loudly.

5.) not less than a minute later, dixie chicks blaring from someone's car windows.

6.) a passive aggressive blue prius trying to block bikes at the interection at 8th and market where cars must turn right. i think i heard a bike run into him while it was trying to pass him on the left.

7.) one of my bike basket's florecitas flying into the street. i littered. i feel bad that i could not stop to pick it back up, but it was lost in a mound of traffic behind me. my flower or my ass. you decide.

8.) leather gloves on the ground. i wish i had gotten a pic of it for ade's sake. and why?! it pretty chilly up in these parts right now. perhaps they are being reused as we speak.

9.) as I was parking my bike in its usual spot, I noticed someone taking a picture of me with his cell phone from inside the coffee shop. Real subtle buddy. I was parking next to his bike perhaps? last time i checked bike racks were two bikes per one rack ratio. OR maybe he likeded my bici's flowers? either way...so yah, I saw you. Oh hai.

Happy (hour) Friday everyone!

Wait what...

Wait What....
"There's a girl, sitting at the curb with a coffee in one hand, and a camera on the other.
And she is taking a picture of me..."

I have replaced them ciggies for my precious little gadget. luckily, thanks ;-)
Happy Monday everyone -

scenes from the bikey lane: back to the grind edition

(unfortuntately, the above does not refer to coffee grindings and such)

i hope everyone had a great 4 day weekend. mine was full of cat visiting (oh hai, i'm in urz haus), christmas tree getting and decorating, veggie leftovers, beer, coffee, and a couple of bike rides. i didn't go on the longer one i had intended...but such is life ;)

1.) lots more traffic on page. grrr. i missed it when all those cars were elsewhere.

2.) hitting the lights, for the most part. niiiice. yet i was still 6 minutes late. oops.

3.) my gears sticking & me nearly falling over at the green in front of a car and behind the bus. luckily for me, the car driver was patient and followed behind us (me and the other commuters) slowly for a couple of blocks.

4.) a bike light totally destroyed at the interestction of 5th and market. doh! i hope it wasn't due to a hit...just a bump w/ a bike light fall.

5.) me riding to jury duty at lunch. :) i serve my civic duties as needed. now if only there was better bike parking available...i must investigate civic center garage if i get called back tomorrow.

happy monday everyone!

Day 2 Of The Copenhagen Invasion

This was exactly a month ago. Our month for us here in San Francisco has been a complete package of bikes, coffee, friends, visiting friends, let's go, we're here non-stop. Lots of fun, and I, am personally glad for this Thanksgiving break. I savored it to the max.

Anyways, this post is long due from the Friday night before halloween. Mikael (As you may now him from copenhaginize & CCC) had done his lecture about bikes and cities earlier that day, and he was probably more jet-lagged than anyone I had interacted with in a while. He was a trooper It was a great group for dinner, some blogging friends of Mikael from the Bay area, the girls and Ade's family.

After some yummy Ethiopian finger friendly dinner, we went for a stroll around the post-critical mass craziness around the heart of the Mission. Mikael was more than thrilled to be riding with all the SF ladies, and concerned that the bar would be too far, you know in copenhagen we only go 2 blocks to a bar and back ;-)

After we heard last call, we decided to yes, head out and ride to each of our destinations. San Francisco may only be 7 mi. square so nothing seems 'far' but I guess those Europeans think of our blocks as big long miles (are we there yet?!?) It was a blast and we all enjoyed ourselves.

scenes from the bikey lane: tuesday is the new monday edition

-1.) the time!! i was running, oh, about 15 minutes late. grr. and i had woken up early too. :)

1.) a cop pulling up across the intersection. i make sure to make a complete stop, leaving nothing to interpretation, because i've seen cops pulling over cyclists in the a.m. rush hour traffic.

2.) a cyclist running through a stop sign and taking a left right in front of cop mentioned in #1. cop and cyclist have words. dirty looks were exchanged. everyone kept going on their merry little morning way.

3.) my favorite little traffic cop. no, that is not an oxymoron. she is responsible for directing traffic to turn from market street onto 8th street. she tends to do this in a way that is favorable to those who commute on two wheels. thank you!

4.) the traffic cop i almost hit yesterday while trying to avoid a pothole. oh heeeeey osssifer. sup? sorry about that!

5.) a silver fox of the architect-looking variety with a sense of humor. you know, he had the spikey silver hair, cool looking plastic glasses, rather large head. i do know of a bikey friendly architecture firm in the direction he was heading. it's not so far fetched a thought...

6.) said silver fox and i exchanged a smile after seeing two, um, junkies yelling at each other about how foiiiine each other is & how good it was to see them. sunny mornings are great for everyone.

7.) the time. i was only 5 minutes late. how did that happen? time slows down, in the best way possible, when you are in the saddle. even if it's just for a short commute.

happy tuesday everyone.
